Air Cooler Finned Tube
The selection of materials for Air Cooler Finned Tubes depends on the nature of the fluid flowing inside the tube and the corrosiveness of the external environment.Air cooler finned tube processes include L-Foot, LL/KL Fin, G-Type (Embedded), and Extruded.
- Base Tube: Carbon steel (ASTM A179/A192), stainless steel (304/316), copper, or duplex steel.
- Fin Material: Aluminum (Al 1060/1100) is primarily selected due to its high thermal conductivity and lightweight properties. In specific high-temperature or corrosive applications, however, copper or steel fins are utilized.

Common Types of Finned Tubes
The method of attaching the fin to the base tube determines the temperature limit, atmospheric corrosion resistance, and heat transfer efficiency.
| Type | Description | Max Temp | Key Characteristics |
| L-Foot | The fin strip is formed into an ‘L’ shape and tension-wrapped around the tube. | 130°C | Good for general purpose; the “foot” protects the base tube from some corrosion. |
| Extruded | A bimetallic tube (aluminum outer, steel inner). Fins are rolled out from the outer tube. | 285°C | Most durable; excellent heat transfer; 100% protection of the base tube. |
| G-Type (Embedded) | The fin is mechanically “embedded” into a machined groove on the tube surface. | 400°C | High thermal stability; handles high temperatures and mechanical stress well. |
| LL / KL | Overlapping feet (LL) or knurled base (KL) for tighter contact. | 160°–250°C | Enhanced protection against atmospheric corrosion compared to standard L-foot. |
Air Cooler Finned Tube Key Advantages:
- Cost-Effective: Simple high-speed winding process and high material efficiency make it one of the most affordable finned tube types.
- Superior Corrosion Resistance: The overlapping “L-foot” fully covers the base tube, protecting carbon steel cores from exposure as long as the aluminum fins remain intact—outperforming standard L-finned tubes.
- Moderate Contact Resistance: Secured by winding tension and elastic deformation, it offers sufficient heat transfer efficiency for low-to-medium temperature applications, though less robust than welded or extruded bonds.
- Easy Maintenance: Wider fin spacing facilitates cleaning via compressed air or water washing, minimizing dust accumulation and blockage.
Industrial Applications
- Air-cooled finned tubes play a crucial role in “heavy-duty” industrial sectors where massive heat loads must be managed:
- Oil & Gas: Serving as core components in air coolers for refining processes, gas compression stations, and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants.
- Power Generation: Used in steam condensers and steam turbine oil coolers.
- Chemical Processing: Employed for organic vapor condensation and process fluid cooling.
- HVAC: Utilized in large-scale industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Air Cooler Finned Tube-L-Foot Tension-Wound Finned Tube
- During the manufacturing process, a metal strip is wound onto the base tube and secured by tension. This creates an expanded contact surface area between the base tube and the fins, thereby significantly enhancing the assembly’s vibration resistance.
- L-Foot tension-wound finned tubes are primarily suited for applications requiring high vibration resistance, where the metal operating temperature remains below 350°F (approximately 177°C).

Air Cooler Finned Tube - Double L-Foot Fin Tension Wound Finned Tubes
- This structure is based on the L-type foot design; however, its unique feature lies in the fact that the “foot” of each subsequent fin overlaps and covers the base of the preceding fin. This design achieves complete coverage of the base tube’s surface.
- Since the strip is pre-bent into an “L-foot” shape, when a new turn is wound onto the tube, its horizontal leg overlaps the foot of the preceding fin, thereby forming an “LL-foot” configuration.
- This manufacturing process endows the base tube with superior corrosion resistance.
Air Cooler Finned Tube-Knurled L Foot Finned Tube
- KL fin represents a variant of the L-type finned tube, designed to achieve a tighter and more substantial contact between the tube body and the fins.
- Although the fin-wrapping process remains nearly identical, the bond strength between the tube and the fins is significantly enhanced by first knurling the surface of the base tube, and subsequently pressing the “L”-shaped foot of the fin into these knurled grooves.

Air Cooler Finned Tube--Edge-Tension Wound Finned Tube
- The fins are wound to the tube using tension, providing contact between the fins and the tube.
- Edge tension wound tubes are a low-cost solution for applications with low metal temperatures and low vibration.
Air Cooler Finned Tube-Embedded Fin
- The root of the fin is embedded into a pre-machined helical groove on the base tube, thereby securely locking it into position.
- This robust bonding method endows the finned tube with strong vibration resistance, allowing it to demonstrate superior operational efficiency even in equipment subjected to continuous thermal cycling or operating at high metal temperatures.

Air Cooler Finned Tube-Extruded Fin
- Fins are formed on an aluminum sleeve through a die-extrusion process, completely encasing the base tube. This aluminum sleeve is tightly bonded to the inner metal tube body. This structure ensures complete coverage of the inner tube and establishes an exceptionally strong bond between the tube body and the fins.
- Extruded finned tubes exhibit zero contact thermal resistance, excellent corrosion resistance, and high mechanical strength, making them the preferred choice for high-end applications—particularly in corrosive chemical environments.
- Furthermore, because the surface of the inner tube is entirely covered by the aluminum layer, these finned tubes are exceptionally easy to clean and maintain.

Air Cooler Finned Tube Application

The use of air cooler finned tubes in Fan Fin Coolers essentially involves leveraging a larger metal surface area (fins) to enable an operational mode that requires no water resources and entails extremely low maintenance costs. This represents the optimal choice for water-scarce regions, projects with stringent environmental requirements, and facilities seeking to reduce long-term operating expenses (OPEX).
