What is a notched finned tube?
A notched finned tube is a heat transfer element with longitudinal or helical grooves machined onto the outer surface of a base tube through mechanical rolling, cutting, or forming processes, and fins installed or integrally formed on top of these grooves. Compared to traditional bare tubes or ordinary finned tubes, its unique “groove + fin” composite structure significantly increases the heat transfer area. Simultaneously, the turbulence generated by the grooves disrupts the boundary layer, thereby greatly improving heat transfer efficiency.
Notched finned tubes are widely used in industrial fields requiring efficient gas-liquid or gas-gas heat exchange, such as petrochemicals, power boilers, air conditioning and refrigeration, waste heat recovery, and air coolers. They are particularly prevalent in the HVAC industry.
Key Features of Notched Finned Tubes
1. Enhanced Heat Transfer Performance:
The grooved structure promotes secondary flow and turbulence inside or outside the tube, effectively thinning the thermal boundary layer and increasing the convective heat transfer coefficient. Combined with the expanded surface area of the fins, the overall heat transfer coefficient can be 2-5 times higher than that of bare tubes.
2. Compact Structure and Space Saving:
For the same heat transfer capacity, grooved finned tube heat exchangers are smaller and more flexible in layout, making them particularly suitable for space-constrained industrial installations.
3. Dust Resistance and Self-Cleaning Capacity:
Some spiral groove designs guide airflow to flush the fin surface, reducing dust accumulation and maintenance frequency, making them especially suitable for dusty flue gas environments.
4. High Mechanical Strength and Good Pressure Resistance:
The grooved structure enhances the rigidity of the tube body. Some processes allow for metallurgical bonding or mechanical locking between the fins and the base tube, preventing high-temperature expansion or vibration-induced detachment.
5. Notched finned tubes adaptable to various operating conditions
Different materials and tank type parameters can be selected according to the characteristics of the medium (corrosiveness, temperature, pressure) to achieve customized design.
6. Notched finned tubes save energy and reduce consumption
Improved heat transfer efficiency means that under the same load, fan power can be reduced or exhaust gas temperature can be lowered, significantly saving operating energy consumption.
Delivery of notched finned tube
We can produce the integral notched finned tubes with un-finned section gaps( 5mm Min.) in the middle of core tube OR bent with designed Bend Radius.
Quality Test:
The notched finned tube quality is assured by hydrostatic or pneumatic tests, eddy current tests & MARCO tests in order to verify design specifications.
Delivery Condition:
Tube ends are square cut, free burrs, internally dried and air blown clean, externally coated with varnish.
The desiccants are put into the each package for continental transportation.

Notched Finned Tube Dimensional Measurement
For notched finned tubes, dimensional measurements should focus on the outer diameter, length, fin height, thickness, and fin pitch (FPI). The outer diameter is measured with calipers, avoiding the finned area; the length is measured in sections using a tape measure; the fin height is determined by taking the average value using a height gauge; the thickness is measured with a micrometer; and the FPI is determined by counting the number of fins per inch.
Calibrated tools must be used during measurement to ensure data accuracy.
