Project Overview
Cangzhou Datang Steel Pipe Co., Ltd. has delivered a customized extruded fin tube machine to a customer in Russia that wants to expand its finned tube production capacity. Datang managed the project from the first technical consultation through machine manufacturing, pre-shipment testing and export packing, and dispatched the complete unit on September 26, 2026.
The machine is a medium-scale model for base tubes with an outer diameter of 12–32 mm, which is the range the customer needed to cover. This case study explains how the model was selected, how the machine was built and checked, and what support Datang provides for installation, commissioning and operator training. For manufacturers comparing fin tube machine suppliers, it also shows what to specify before requesting a quotation.

Customer Background
The customer is based in Russia and wanted to increase its finned tube output by adding extruded fin-forming equipment. It approached Datang for a machine that forms integral fins (ribs) on tubes, and it was looking for a reliable manufacturer of extruded fin tube machines. The customer is not named in this case study.
Customer Challenges and Requirements
Adding fin-forming capacity from an overseas supplier is a significant equipment decision. The machine has to suit the customer’s tube sizes, run consistently, and arrive with enough technical backing for the customer’s own team to put it into service. The customer set out the following requirements:
- Stable equipment performance
- Compatibility with base tubes of 12–32 mm outer diameter
- Reliable equipment quality from an experienced manufacturer
- A production capacity of 30 m/h
- Technical support during commissioning
- Training for the customer’s operating staff
- Certificates to accompany the equipment
Because Datang and the customer are in different countries, installation and commissioning guidance is delivered by video.
Our Solution: A Medium-Scale Extruded Fin Tube Machine
After a technical consultation, Datang’s engineering team reviewed the customer’s tube specifications, output target and documentation needs, and recommended a medium-scale extruded fin tube machine.
Matching the machine model to the tube range
Datang builds extruded fin tube machines in three scales, each covering a different range of base tube diameters:
| Machine scale | Base tube outer diameter | Note |
| Small-scale | 8–12 mm | |
| Medium-scale (selected for this project) | 12–32 mm | Recommended fin height up to 12.5 mm |
| Large-scale | 15–42 mm |
The customer’s 12–32 mm requirement corresponds to the full range of the medium-scale model, so there was no need to move up to the large-scale machine.
Engineering assessment results
Datang’s engineers confirmed four points before the order was placed:
- A medium-scale extruded fin tube making machine would meet the customer’s finned tube specifications.
- A fast delivery schedule could be arranged.
- The production capacity would meet the customer’s requirement.
- All certificates requested by the customer could be provided.
Both parties quickly reached an agreement, and the machine went into production.
Remote installation, commissioning and training support
The supply scope includes video-guided installation, video-guided commissioning and online operational training for the customer’s staff. Datang provides this guidance remotely, so support does not depend on travel arrangements.

How an extruded fin tube machine works
An extruded fin tube machine forms fins on the outer surface of a tube through a mechanical rolling (extrusion) process. In a bimetallic configuration, the aluminum fins are tightly bonded to the base tube. The fins increase the heat transfer surface area, which supports heat transfer performance in heat exchanger, air coolers and other thermal equipment. Depending on its configuration, the machine can also produce single-metal extruded fin tubes. To see the finished product, visit our page on bimetallic extruded finned tubes.

Manufacturing and Quality Control
The machine was built and checked in three stages:
- Component preparation. The cutter shaft, cutting blades, motor, cooling pump, work table and main spindle were prepared.
- The equipment frame was completed, followed by assembly of the main unit.
- Operational testing and inspection. Before shipment, the machine was tested to confirm stable operation and compliance with the agreed technical specifications.
The project documentation lists ISO 9001 and CE certificates, and the customer’s certificate request was addressed during technical review. Datang’s wider inspection and testing practices are described on our Quality Control page, and you can see more of our in-house capability on the fin tube manufacturing equipment page.

Extruded Fin Tube Machine FAQ
What is an extruded fin tube machine used for?
It is specialized equipment for producing finned tubes. Through a rolling (extrusion) process it forms fins on the outer surface of a tube, increasing the heat transfer surface area. The resulting finned tubes are commonly used in heat exchangers, air coolers and other thermal equipment. Depending on the configuration, the machine can produce bimetallic extruded fin tubes or single-metal extruded fin tubes.
What tube diameters and fin specifications can the machine process?
Across Datang’s three machine scales, base tube outer diameter ranges from 8 mm to 42 mm, and customization is available. Base tubes can be carbon steel, stainless steel, copper or alloy, and fin materials are aluminum (1060/1100) or copper. Fin pitch and height can be adjusted to your heat exchanger requirements. Please send your tube specifications or drawings, including outer diameter, wall thickness, fin pitch and fin height, and we will assess feasibility promptly.
How long does it take to manufacture and deliver the machine?
Lead time depends on the machine configuration, tooling requirements, production schedule and inspection arrangements. Before placing an order, confirm the production completion date, the testing plan, the packaging method and the expected shipping schedule. Contact us with your requirements and we will confirm timing for your project.
Does an extrusion-type fin tube machine need a cooling and lubrication system?
Yes. Datang’s machines are designed with integrated cooling and lubrication. The system has two parts: cooling for the tool shafts and tool holders, and cooling and lubrication for the finned tube itself. Nozzles on both sides of the tool holder assembly cool the tool shafts and holders, and manual cooling can be added if the holders overheat during prolonged operation. For the tube, the cooling fluid removes the heat generated during fin rolling and provides the lubrication that reduces resistance, so the choice of fluid matters.
How easy is it to change tooling when switching tube diameters?
The machine uses a modular tooling system. Depending on the tube diameter or fin pitch, replacing the circular cutting blades or the mold head typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Datang supplies operation manuals, mold calibration guides and video tutorials to help operators learn the changeover process.
What spare parts and consumables are needed, and how long do they last?
The main wear parts are the forming/cutting rollers and the guide sleeves. Tooling is made from high-quality alloy steel such as heat-treated Cr12MoV or SKD11. As a typical guide, a standard set of forming rollers processes roughly 80,000 to 150,000 meters of tube before regrinding or replacement, depending on the hardness of the aluminum. We recommend ordering a one-year supply of wear parts together with the machine.
What information do I need to provide to get a quotation?
To prepare an accurate quotation, please send as much of the following as you can:
- Base tube material and outer diameter
- Length of the finished finned tubes
- Local power supply and voltage requirements
- Destination country, and whether you need installation guidance or operator training
If your technical specifications are not final, you can send drawings, finned tube samples or preliminary production requirements and our engineers will help evaluate the project.
