What is Studded Tube?

Studded finned tube, also known as studded finned tube or pin-shaped tube, is a type of pipe material reinforced by welding metal nails to the pipe surface. Its appearance resembles the head of a nail, hence the name “studded tube.”

Studded tube uses metal nails fixed to the pipe surface to reinforce the pipe. The increased surface area improves heat transfer efficiency (the conductivity coefficient increases by 30-50%). It is primarily used in heat transfer equipment such as heat exchangers and air conditioners, significantly increasing pressure capacity (compressive strength increases by 20-30%) and corrosion resistance.

Studded finned tubes use cylindrical pins welded to the heat exchange tube surface in a square or hexagonal arrangement. The square or hexagonal pattern enhances heat transfer.

Applications of Studded Tubes

Studded tubes are widely used in the petrochemical industry. In particular, in the convection chamber of tubular furnaces, studded tubes are often used as heat transfer elements to enhance heat transfer outside the tube.

Studded tubes can improve the heat transfer coefficient on the flue gas side. Their area is two to three times that of bare tubes. With proper design, they can achieve the same heat intensity as radiation.

Studded tube equipment utilizes resistance welding, with PLC control. The feed motor and indexing feature servo motors. The human-machine interface allows for configuration of the number of studs, indexing parameters, and compensation coefficients, ensuring product quality and precision according to process requirements.

Applicable Scenarios Due to Structural Features

In boiler economizers, studded tubes enhance heat transfer on the flue gas side, withstand high temperatures of 400-600°C, and are suitable for dusty flue gas environments.

In chemical heat exchangers, studded tubes made of corrosion-resistant materials are used for heat exchange with acidic and alkaline media, with the stud density adjusted according to the severity of the corrosiveness.

In waste heat recovery equipment, studded finned tubes improve the heat utilization rate of low-temperature flue gas. Marine propulsion systems utilize their vibration resistance to adapt to turbulent environments.

Processing techniques require a balance between precision and strength

When welding the nail heads, argon arc welding is used, with a current controlled between 80-120A to ensure penetration depth and avoid cold welds. Monolithic nail head tubes are suitable for thin-walled pipes. The stamping pressure is set according to the material thickness, with carbon steel pressure 10%-15% higher than stainless steel. The nail head spacing tolerance is controlled within ±0.5mm, and the height tolerance does not exceed 0.3mm to ensure uniform heat transfer.
