What is an economizer?
Boiler economizer is also called economizer,it is a heat exchange device in the boiler’s tail duct that utilizes waste heat from flue gases to heat boiler feed water, improving thermal efficiency and reducing exhaust gas temperatures.
An economizer is installed in the lower portion of the boiler’s tail duct to recover waste heat. It heats the boiler feed water to saturation at drum pressure, thereby utilizing the heat from the low-temperature flue gases to reduce exhaust gas temperatures, thereby saving energy and improving efficiency.
Economizers are not pressure-restricted and are typically constructed from carbon steel pipes with an outer diameter of 32 to 51 mm. Fins and ribs are sometimes added to the tubes to optimize heat transfer. Economizers typically consist of horizontally arranged parallel elbows (also known as serpentine pipes). They are widely used in industry and are also gaining popularity in agriculture and related commercial sectors.
How Economizers Energy Save
Based on boiler system knowledge, the core function of an economizer is to recover waste heat from flue gases and reduce fuel consumption. Typically located in the boiler’s tail flue, the economizer transfers heat from the high-temperature flue gas to the low-temperature feedwater through heat exchange, raising the feedwater temperature entering the drum. This process not only saves fuel (“coal saving”) but also reduces exhaust gas temperature, aligning with the principle of thermodynamic efficiency optimization.
Economizers improve cycle efficiency by adding a heat recovery process. Specifically, they increase the average heat absorption temperature, thereby improving the efficiency of the entire cycle.
1. By absorbing heat from the low-temperature flue gas, the economizer not only lowers the exhaust gas temperature but also effectively reduces flue gas losses within the economizer, thereby saving fuel.
2. Before entering the drum, the feedwater is heated by the economizer. This not only shortens the time the feedwater absorbs heat on the heating surfaces but also allows the economizer to replace some of the more expensive evaporation heating surfaces.
3. Due to the increased feedwater temperature, the wall temperature difference decreases upon entering the drum, reducing thermal stress and further extending the drum’s service life.
Economizer by Material
Based on the manufacturing material, economizers are classified into cast iron and steel tube economizers. Non-fluidizing economizers are mostly made of cast iron, but some are made of steel tubes. Fluidizing economizers, on the other hand, can only be made of steel tubes. Cast iron economizers are mostly used in boilers with pressures ≤ 2.5 MPa. For pressures exceeding 2.5 MPa, economizers made of steel tubes should be used.
Cast iron economizers are mostly used in boilers with pressures ≤ 2.5 MPa. Non-fluidizing economizers are mostly made of cast iron.

H-type economizers use H-shaped finned tubes and are commonly used for flue gas waste heat recovery in boiler plants.

Both the spiral-finned economizer and the H-type economizer (most commonly used) are finned economizers.

Tube economizers should be made of steel tubes for pressures exceeding 2.5 MPa. Fluidizing economizers can only be made of steel tubes.
